This is a class for people who are curious about classical and other great music, but do not have much experience with them. We will listen to CD’s and discuss music from symphony, opera, ballet, and film, focusing on why this great music grabs us with such emotional intensity. We will discuss the great themes of sex, god, love and death and consider how this music can generate moving and highly emotional and personal experiences in us to better understand them. This is NOT a music history class; it is a class to experience the great music through listening and discussion. We will move from Beethoven’s Ninth, to “Swan Lake”, to the ”Mass for the Dead”, to “Ben Hur”, to “Apocalypse Now”, and beyond. Bring only a pen and notebook. And an inquiring ear and mind.
